TV Fanatic recently published its midseason report card for season 12 of Grey’s Anatomy. Justin’s character, Alex, once again got singled out as the character who deserves more screentime. Alex proposing to Jo was chosen as the most surprising cliffhanger.
Read on to see what they had to say about Alex and click the link to see the full report card.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 Midseason Report Card

Character Who Deserves More Screentime: I can’t wait for the day when Alex Karev stops being chosen as most underutilized character, but that day just hasn’t come yet. We love Alex Karev, but too often, he’s a side character rather than one who gets the focus. Based on the cliffhanger at the end of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Episode 8, though, it seems like this issue may be remedied when the series returns from hiatus.

Most Surprising Cliffhanger: Alex proposed to Jo on the night that she decided to tell him she was leaving. Jo has been struggling with the fact that Alex rarely seems to put her first, which is only exacerbated by Alex’s close friendship with Meredith. But the closeness and the secrets that were driving Jo crazy? That’s because Meredith had been holding on to the engagement ring for Alex. When he does propose, it’s beautiful. Of course, that’s a mid-season finale for you, and we won’t get the answer until ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 returns.

Over at EMGN, they published a list of the 15 awesome TV characters that weren’t the main character. Alex Karev is on their list. Check it out:

15 Awesome TV Characters That Weren’t The Main Character

Alex Karev starts out as the ultimate D-bag. Then he turns into the heartbreaker. Then viewers start liking him because they learn his backstory and find out about his crazy mother and then there’s the whole Ava thing… Then everyone hates him again – but then the Izzy thing happens. Anyway, long story short: thank you, Justin Chambers, for the many facets of Alex Karev and making him one of the best and intriguingly diverse characters on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.

Last week, on Christmas Eve, a couple of fans ran into Justin at Amoeba Music store in Hollywood and took this pic with him.

Well, it’s that time of year when the reviews and retrospectives start coming out…

People magazine named Shonda Rhimes one of the “25 most intriguing people of the year” and Entertainment Weekly published outtakes from its favorites photo shoots of 2015. Both magazines used new photos from their Shondaland photo shoot and I added the scans to our gallery.

TV Fanatic has been posting its ‘Year in Review’ lists and, unsurprisingly, Alex Karev is on its list of 15 characters who deserve more screen time. Check it out:

Year in Review: 15 Characters Who Deserve More Screen Time

As we continue our year in review, we’re looking at characters who could have made good work of more juicy stories.

They were underutilized, some of them mere backgrounds when they are, in fact, leads. Try to find good photos of them in their current season and you’ll see what we mean.

Others are just so good we think they should be featured a lot more often.

1. Alex Karev from Grey’s Anatomy. He’s one of the best characters and one of the few originals remaining, yet he does not get the screen time he deserves. Grey’s keeps bringing in unnecessary new characters instead of featuring the great ones they already have. Alex should be saving babies while providing advice and sarcastic comments on a regular basis. Instead, he’s pushed to the sidelines more often than not.

Last Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy was a big one for Justin’s character, Alex Karev. Below are a couple of reviews of the episode that specifically mention Justin.

Buddy TV

I complain all the time that GA doesn’t showcase Justin Chambers nearly enough. One could argue that Alex Karev is the show’s most underused regular and yet he is, in my opinion, a MVP.

Entertainment Weekly

Alex Karev wasn’t even supposed to be a long-running character on Grey’s Anatomy, but then Justin Chambers turned him into this pillar. And then after George and Izzie and Cristina, it’s just the woman that the whole show is named after … and Alex Karev. So it’s always nice when there’s an episode that helps us to remember why Dr. Karev is the man of Grey’s Anatomy after all of these years. Sure, there’s some sister drama and Bailey is chief and there are hot new interns, but this week is overflowing with Alex, and it’s overdue

Grey’s episode this week is titled “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Check out the synopsis, the promo and a sneak peek with Alex, Meredith, Maggie and Amelia carpooling to work.

“Old Time Rock ‘n Roll” – Owen suggests the interns learn a vital lesson on how to break bad news to patients’ families, and Arizona’s 90-year-old patient reassures her that she’s destined to find love again. Meanwhile, the sisters completely forget about the dinner party they’re hosting for everyone, on “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 (8:00 – 9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Apologies for the delay, but it was a busy weekend.
Cosmopolitan posted an interesting take on the character of Alex Karev. Below is only an excerpt of the article, so click on the link to read it in full.
Sidenote: Alex Karev has always been my (Diana) favorite Grey’s character!

How Alex Karev Became an Unlikely New Heartthrob of “Grey’s Anatomy”

What bothered me most was the fact that he was ever even assigned to Dr. Bailey’s service: In the pilot, only Izzie, George, Cristina, and Meredith were her interns. What was the point of transferring Alex to Dr. Bailey too? Did the network not think that three powerhouse women and one brilliant but bumbling boy next door were enough? Did we seriously (to use the frequently overused catchphrase of the show’s early seasons) need to add a white bad boy into the mix?

What followed for Alex (played by Justin Chambers) was a veritable parade of douchebaggery. He started a syphilis outbreak. (Not hating on his casual sex game, but he’s a doctor — he should know to use condoms.) He yelled at patients and treated women (actually, everyone) like they were beneath him. He somehow managed to both sexually harass and reject Addison Montgomery Shepherd. And he entered into a codependent relationship with Jane Doe/Ava that nearly destroyed both of them. There were flashes of compassion throughout — I’ll admit I got choked up when he picked up Izzie and carried her away from Denny Dukette’s death bed — and it was clear viewers were supposed to see him as a jerk with a heart of gold, in part because we were supplied with plenty of explanations for his behavior. He had an abusive father, a mentally ill mother, and a youth spent in foster care and juvie. But all those explanations were just that: explanations. They weren’t excuses.

And yet now here we are, in a world where Alex is responsible enough to be Meredith’s emergency contact. In a world where he’s in a loving, honest relationship with Jo, someone with whom he’s finally allowed himself to be vulnerable. In a world where, if my suspicious/fantasies are correct, he’s going to be a committed father before the season is up. How did Grey’s pull this off?
